Labor Day! No General Meeting Until Sept. 13

We’re shifting the general meeting by a week, since the next one would fall on Labor Day, and we don’t want to interfere with the long weekend.

The next meeting will be on September 13th, at 6:30pm.

The main topic of discussion will be classes to be held at the space.

We’ve got a preliminary list of classes we’re planning on offering, but we’d love other suggestions, so come on out on the 13th and give us your input!

Tuesdays Mini-Hackathons

Starting tomorrow, this Tuesday, August 24th, we’ll be doing mini-Hackathons at Workshop 88 from 6:30pm through to later in the night. We’ve got Adam, Fredo, Rudy, Jim, and me dedicated to coming out and getting some work at the workshop done tomorrow, and maybe we’ll have time some other fun stuff, too!

Last week we welcomed three awesome TVs, we got to lounge and enjoy some fight games on a massive 36 in TV. And we got to witness the first Munchkin draw on record.

Last week D&D dominated the space with the medialab being used for the recording of the Film Yarn Podcast. And our awesome comfy leather couches were used for a vicious game of Munchkin.

This week will see the generous donation from College of DuPage of three big TVs to incorporate to the vintage video game corner (which will see a replay of the PlayStation classic Simpsons Wrestling) and perhaps to see a movie or TV show.

Come visit us and bring your games! this event is open to the public.

Veggie Fest this weekend.

Nothing screams summer like a good ol’ neighborhood festival, and nothing says “end of Summer” to me more than Naperville’s annual Veggie Fest.

Hosted at the Science of Spirituality Temple in Naperville Road, the organizers claim is the biggest free vegetarian food festival in the United States. They offer cooking workshops, live music, and vendors from all over the country.

Game Night. TONIGHT.

Despite my overwhelming urge to convince everyone at The Workshop that having a Starcraft II LAN Party would be an awesome idea, we’ll be playing D&D, Puerto Rico, Settlers, Munchkin, original XBOX, or any other number of assorted games this Thursday night starting at 6:30pm. As usual. Thursdays. 6:30pm. And, seriously guys: Don’t. Think. Small. Starcraft II LAN Party is in the near-future.

Maybe as a members only event?

This week my D&D character, “The Amazing Bob”, will be making his return after a… shall we say… short sabbatical. The Amazing Bob’s bow is ready to drink blood from his foes freshly cut wounds once again. Also, The Amazing Bob is ready to drink ale… once again.

SEGUE! I brewed a ton of beer last night (really, only a few hours ago) in partial preparation for the Workshop 88 Brewfest. Proof:

YES. I was brewing AND bottling all in the same day. Two different beers.

After a lot of wall scraping on Saturday (wherein Andrew and I tackled the spackle issue with great intellectual vigor), we’re finally moving onto the priming and painting portion of the project. Thanks to everyone who came out and put their time in!

Build Day, This Saturday.

Making our space usable is now the main priority of Workshop88, This Saturday, July 31st we’ll have the opportunity to ready the place to start moving our projects and tools. And we need your help and expertise. This Saturday’s agenda will be:

Front Room:
- Scraping walls
- Priming walls
- Tightening outlets
- Increasing lighting
- Organizing a storage solution
- Making the front room more friendly (via painting, wall hangings, an updated front door logo, etc)

Workshop:
- Baseboard prep and installation
- Drywall for the exposed bathroom wall
- Tightening outlets
- Painting/mounting our new storage cabinet (thanks Eric!)
- Framing and installing the wall dividing the workshop and electronics area.

A special thanks to Bill for our new dehumidifier! The smell from last Friday’s rain has already moved from ‘musty’ to ‘damp’! If you have tools useful for the aforementioned projects that are not already on site… bring em. If anybody has an extra shop-vac, that would be nice too, so Adam can stop carting his back and forth

Game Night Part 3: The Return of Puerto Rico.

This Thursday, and every Thursday is Game Night at Workshop88.

Doors open at 6:30PM. and goes until the last of our members decides to go home.

After last week’s predictably polemic and borderline violent game of RISK, and a morally objectionable game of island exploitation for the good of the Spanish crown in the 17th century called Puerto Rico our traditional D&D game comes back with a fury.

In the vintage video game corner you can expect Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game, so if you were looking forward to control Raul Julia to defeat Kylee Minogue in this frustratingly obtuse game, this is your chance.

Some guests promised to bring a zombie board game; and we’d love to see the obscure, strange, home made, or otherwise awesome games you’d like to share with us.
